The Span Bathroom Vanity Light features direct light distribution made possible through the use of edge-lit LED light guide technology. What appears to be a simple plate of frosted acrylic when off, then illuminates across the entire surface as if the light is coming out of thin air. Available with direct (downlight) or direct/indirect (up and downlight) light distribution options in 2, 3 and 4 foot lengths. Mounts vertically or horizontally. Offered with 4 finishes. Note: Not all options are available.

Answer
For the direct option light is emitted from only one side of panel and for the direct/indirect option the light is emitted directly on one side and indirectly on the other.

These lights look great and they're very bright. The construction quality is decent. But the ballast used to drive the LEDs is terrible: connected to a standard light switch, they takes 1.5-2 seconds to light up after being switched on, and connected to a dimming switch, they hum loudly. Very disappointing, I wouldn't recommend them.
